The Worker Protection Bill will become law (fawcettsociety.org.uk)

Context

The Treasury Select Committee has recently held an oral evidence session as part of its ‘Sexism in the City’ inquiry into sexism experienced by women in financial services.  In addition, the Fawcett Society has published a commentary on the new Worker Protection Bill.

Key points to note

  • The inquiry is examining the barriers faced by women in financial services and the progress made in removing gender pay gaps. The Committee took evidence on a range of matters including changes since 2018, culture, board diversity, the retention and recruitment of women and sexual harassment in the workplace.
  • On a similar note, it was recently announced that the Worker Protection Bill has passed its final stage in the House of Commons, which means it will become law before the end of the year. This law will create a ‘preventative duty’: a requirement that employers prevent sexual harassment from happening in their workplaces. This means clear policies, training, and proper, impartial investigations into reported harassment.
